Model Ship Kit Skill Levels

We have divided all our kits into five Skill Levels. These levels are described below.

All Skill Levels require the modeler to be able to follow written instructions and read and interpret plan drawings. The Skill Levels are:
Skill Level 1 – Ship Model Kits can be built without prior model building experience, using simple hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require cutting & fitting of timbers. Suitable for a 12 + year old child under adult guidance/supervision.

Skill Level 2 – Ship Model kits require slightly more skill and some prior experience using hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 2 kits require cutting, fitting and shaping. The model ship kit builder is expected to be able to apply basic problem solving techniques to identify parts, fittings and timbers. This level is recommend for modelers to begin with.

Skill Level 3 – Ship Model Kits are intended for the person having prior experience building wooden model kits. Skill Level 3 kits contain parts that require cutting, fitting, shaping and fabricating wooden and possibly metal parts. Skill Level 3 kits require the model builder to be able to read and interpret drawings. Skill Level 3 kits also require the model ship kit builder to be able to apply basic problem solving techniques to identify parts, fittings and timbers.

Skill Level 4Ship Model Kits are intended for the experienced and advanced model ship builder. The model builder of this kit level is expected to demonstrate high level conceptual problem solving skills in following building instructions, reading and interpreting plans, the application of different hull planking techniques for differing hull shapes. Before building a Skill Level 4 kit it is recommended the modeler construct a Skill Level 3 kit.

The model builder is expected to demonstrate all the previously presented skills along with the ability to research and apply solutions to model building techniques. The model builder is expected to be able to act independently to build the model kit.

The three most important characteristics for a successful modeler are patience, patience and yet more patience. Before cutting or gluing anything give a lot of thought to the task at hand. Modelling wooden ship models is a very rewarding hobby. Take your time and enjoy the craft.
