History of the HMS Sirius

The HMS SIRIUS – Flag Ship of the First Fleet 1787 was the flag ship of the First Fleet. This frigate, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, led a fleet of 11 ships carrying 1350 convicts, sailors and other passengers, to establish the first European settlement in New South Wales.

The fleet left England on 13 May 1787 and after a monumental journey taking eight months to complete the fleet arrived in Botany Bay between 18-20 January 1788. Two years later, when the fledgling colony of New South Wales was struggling to support itself, the HMS Sirius and the HMS Supply were sent on a special voyage to transport marines and convicts to Norfolk Island to lessen the burden on the new settlement. It was here that the Sirius foundered when it struck a reef off Sydney Bay (Kingston) on Norfolk Island and was finally wrecked on the 19th March 1790.

The HMS Sirius had a relative short career, playing a role in Britain’s withdrawal from America and a major role in British expansion into the Pacific. The HMS Sirius was originally named the Berwick, and was built in 1780-1781, at London’s Rotherhithe, then a shipbuilding village on the Thames.

The Berwick was purchased by the British navy prior to completion and fitted out as an armed storeship. Initially stationed at the Nore, off Sheerness at the mouth of the Thames. She made several voyages to America during the period 1782-1785 where she visited Halifax harbour, Nova Scotia, New York and the West Indies before returning to Deptford on 5 February 1785.

On the 23 August 1786 orders arrived from the Admiralty to the Navy Board to prepare the Berwick to be employed on ‘foreign service’. On the 12 October 1786 Admiral Howe wrote to the Navy Board requesting his Majesty’s storeship the Berwick, be registered on the list of the Royal Navy as a 6th Rate by the name of the Sirius. The Berwick had been recommissioned as the 20 – gun HMS Sirius to escort the First Fleet to Australia in 1787-88.
