The schooner Vega was built in 1909 in Viken and sailed until the early 1930s in the Baltic Sea as a pure sailing cargo ship. In 1932 the ship was fitted with its first engine and it continued to sail the Baltic Sea and the west coast of Sweden until the mid 1960s when Vega was sold to owners in Stockholm and taken out of service. Vega sank in the harbour of Stockholm in 1985 and was salvaged and given to the Swedish national museum for preservation. The museum finally donated Vega to the current owners,Stiftelsen Manniskan och Havet, who have now restored her to her former glory. Vega is sailing every summer and has been one of the participants in the Tall Ships Race several times.
