The Polacca Venezian appeared during the first years of the 18th Century, in the area of the Mediterranean Sea, the Polacca can be considered as a development of the Xebec.
The characteristic element of this type of vessel was the structure of masts and fitments of rigging. Its tonnage was not more than 500 tonnes. It was a light sailing vessel that can attain a good speed in light winds, and was also highly manoeuvrable under oars. For its characteristics it was employed by the Venetian Navy to operate along the irregular Adriatic Sea coasts, against the Dalmatians pirates, to protect the trading of Venice.
