Binnacles
Binnacles were important navigational instruments found on ships, serving as a housing for the ship’s compass. These sturdy structures were typically made of wood or brass and were strategically positioned on the ship’s deck, often near the helm or the captain’s quarters. The binnacle provided a protective enclosure for the compass, shielding it from the elements and ensuring its accuracy in guiding the ship’s course. Inside the binnacle, the compass was mounted on gimbals, allowing it to remain level even as the ship pitched and rolled with the motion of the sea. This feature was crucial for maintaining accurate navigational readings. The binnacle also often included a hinged cover or glass windows to protect the compass from wind, rain, and spray, while still allowing the helmsman or navigator to see the compass readings.
