Port Holes

Port holes, also known as gun ports, were small openings or windows found on the sides of old sailing ships. These circular or oval-shaped openings were typically reinforced with metal or wooden frames and had covers or shutters that could be opened or closed. Port holes served several important functions on sailing ships, including ventilation, light provision, and as firing positions for cannons. The primary purpose of port holes was to provide ventilation and light below decks. By opening the port hole covers, fresh air could circulate inside the ship, improving air quality and reducing the risk of foul odors or diseases. The natural light that entered through the port holes also brightened the interior spaces, making them more comfortable for the crew. Additionally, port holes were strategically positioned to serve as firing positions for cannons. The covers could be removed during naval battles, allowing cannons to be aimed and fired through the port holes, providing the ship with offensive capabilities against enemy vessels.
