Belaying Pins
Belaying pins were essential fittings found on sailing ships, serving as an integral part of the rigging system. These sturdy wooden or metal pins were typically about a foot in length and were used to secure various lines and ropes on the ship. They were commonly made from hardwood, such as oak or lignum vitae, to withstand the demanding conditions of sea voyages. The belaying pins were inserted into holes along the rails, bulwarks, or pin rails of the ship, forming a neat arrangement known as a belaying pin rack. The pins were strategically positioned to hold and secure different lines, such as halyards, sheets, and braces, preventing them from becoming tangled or creating hazards on the deck. Sailors would skillfully wrap the lines around the belaying pins, creating a secure and organized system that allowed for quick adjustments or releasing when needed. Belaying pins were indispensable tools for sailors, aiding in the efficient management of the ship’s rigging and ensuring the safe and smooth operation of the vessel during its time at sea. Our Wooden Model Ship Fitting Belaying Pins come in Wood Yellow, Wood Brown, Brass and Black Metal.
