Anchors

Anchors were vital equipment sailing ships, serving as a means of stabilizing and securing the vessel while at anchor or during mooring. These large, heavy objects were designed to grip the seabed and hold the ship in place, preventing it from drifting with the currents or winds. Anchors typically consisted of a metal shank with two curved arms, known as flukes, at one end. The shank provided the weight and stability, while the flukes dug into the seabed to provide the holding power. The upper end of the shank had a ring or eyelet for attaching the anchor chain or rope. The flukes were designed to pivot and angle themselves downward when the anchor was dropped, ensuring effective penetration into the seabed. The size and weight of the anchor varied depending on the size of the ship and the conditions it would encounter. Larger ships required larger anchors to provide sufficient holding power. Anchors were usually made of iron or later steel, and their design evolved over time to improve their efficiency and ease of use. Some anchors also featured additional features like stock or arms that could be folded for stowing when not in use. Ships had 3 to 10 anchors depending on the size of the ship. Warships would carry an anchor on each side of the bow with an additional 2 to 4 anchors lashed to the channels. Wooden Ship Model Fittings Anchors come in a range of sizes and shapes.
