Underdeck Cannons
Underdeck cannons, also known as below-decks cannons, were powerful artillery pieces installed in the lower decks of old sailing ships. These cannons were strategically positioned within the ship’s hull, typically on gun decks below the main or upper decks. Placing cannons below deck provided several advantages. It protected the cannons from the elements, ensuring they remained functional and preserved their firepower. The cannons were typically mounted on sturdy gun carriages that allowed for adjustments in elevation and firing angles. Gun crews, often consisting of skilled sailors or marines, operated the cannons below deck, loading them with ammunition and firing them through gunports or openings in the ship’s sides.
