Deadeye - Chain Strap Assembly
The deadeye chainstrap assembly was a critical component of the rigging system on ships. It consisted of deadeyes, chainstraps, and associated fittings. Deadeyes were round wooden or metal blocks with holes drilled around the circumference, while chainstraps were metal straps with links or eyes at each end. The assembly was used to tension and secure various lines and stays on the ship. The deadeye chainstrap assembly was responsible for creating tension in the rigging by providing a point of attachment and allowing for adjustments. The deadeyes were threaded with ropes or lines, which were then connected to the chainstraps. The chainstraps, in turn, were secured to the ship’s structure, such as the mast or the hull, using bolts or other fasteners. By adjusting the tension on the lines running through the deadeyes, sailors could control the shape and trim of the sails, contributing to the overall performance and maneuverability of the ship.
