Sheaves
Sheaves, also known as pulley sheaves or blocks, were essential components of the rigging system on ships. They were wheel-like devices with a grooved rim designed to guide and redirect ropes or cables. Sheaves were typically made of wood, metal, or a combination of both. The primary function of sheaves on ships was to change the direction of the ropes and provide mechanical advantage. They were strategically placed along the rigging to facilitate the hoisting and lowering of sails, as well as the operation of other rigging elements. The grooved rim of the sheave reduced friction and allowed the rope to move smoothly, enabling efficient and controlled maneuvering. Sheaves were often incorporated into blocks, where multiple sheaves were mounted on a common frame, creating a powerful mechanical advantage system. The proper selection and arrangement of sheaves were crucial for the effective functioning of the ship’s rigging, ensuring the crew could manage the sails and control the ship’s movement with relative ease.
