History of the Amphion Swedish Yacht
The AMPHION – 18th Century Swedish Yacht was designed and equipped as a fast pleasure vessel, to be employed for the displacement of King Gustavus III of Sweden. However the Amphion took part in military engagements too: in fact with the Amphion, the King led a victorious fight against the Russian fleet at Svenksund.
The Amphion was armed in the dockyard at Stockholm and was launched in 1778. Its last news dates back to 1850 which was the supposed period of its unrigging.
The Amphion’s original plan, a masterpiece of harmony and purity of lines, is ascribed to Fredrik Chapman, the first naval architect who codified ships projection one exact mathematic rules, instead of empiric customs of his epoch. The ship was schooner-rigged and this, together with the tapered line of the hull, gave it exceptional sailing qualities.
