History of the Paranza Adriatic Fishing Boat
The term Paranza indicates an Italian boat typical of the central Adriatic, once diffused along the entire coast between the mounth of the Savio and the Gargano. Attributable to boats with ‘duck breast’ or ‘small sailing boat’ stern, like all popular boats it was the result of a complex historical evolution and structural adjustment to uses and environments. Between 7 and 16 metres in length, the boat, rather round and with almost flat hull at the main section was marked by the curved, retroflexed stem, with ‘cap’ end.
Already documented in the lower Adriatic around the middle of the last century the Paranza originally had a lateen mast, with lower lateen sail hoisted to a long mast, constructed in a single piece; larger boats were generally fitted with outriggers with large polacre.
However due to the numerous accidents that took place, in particular during the memorable sea storm of 1892, in which some boats capsized with outrigger stuck in the sand sail of upper Adriatic tradition.
The Paranza Adriatic Fishing Boat was constructed along the coast of Marche, Abruzzo and Molise, the boats were generally used for deep-sea fishing with trawl nets, and to a lesser extent for light transport.
