History of the HMS Prince 100 Gun First Rate Vessel
One of the most beautiful 17th century English ships, HMS Prince was designed by Phineas Pett, the builder of the Sovereign of the Seas. A first class vessel armed with 100 cannon and carrying a wartime crew of 780, Prince was launched at Chatham in 1670. She fought her first battle in 1672 during the third war between England and Holland under the flag of the Duke of York. Even though the Prince was victorious, she was badly damaged during the conflict. She served the Crown until 1692.
Mamoli’s imposing ship model features double plank-on-bulkhead construction using laser cut poplar and mahogany wooden components. First planking of flexible beech wood strips is covered with a layer of rich African walnut.
The lavish ornamentation of the original warship (including figurehead, lanterns, transom, handrails and other decorative details) is reproduced in expertly cast gilded metal. Britannia metal is used to recreate the lifeboat, anchors, gratings, cannon and carriages, porthole frames and covers, stairs, belaying pins and more.
