History of the Greek Trireme 480 B.C

The model represents a Greek Trireme from the age of the battle of Salamis (480 B.C.). It had a crew of 170 oarsmen and about 30 warriors. Under favourable conditions, triremes could travel at up to 12 miles per hour. The main weapon of the trireme was a bronze ram which penetrated the side of enemy vessels. The main propulsion was rowing, the sails used only for longer-lasting voyages. During battle the sails and the mast were laid down and the ship was powered only by oars.
