Boom Yokes
Boom Yokes were important components of the rigging system on ships, specifically associated with the gaff sail. The gaff jaw served as a fitting that secured the gaff, a spar used to extend the top edge of a four-sided sail, to the mast. It was typically made of metal, such as iron or brass, and designed to provide a secure and adjustable connection between the gaff and the mast. The gaff jaw had a hinged or sliding mechanism that allowed for easy attachment and detachment of the gaff sail. Sailors could open the gaff jaw, slide it over the mast, and then secure it in place using pins or other fastening methods. This allowed for efficient handling of the sail, enabling adjustments to be made as needed based on wind conditions. The gaff jaw played a crucial role in the operation and control of the gaff sail, ensuring proper sail trim and contributing to the overall performance of the sailing ship. The Boom Yoke jaw fitted around the mast which confined the heel and allowed the boom to pivot around the mast.
