History of the Berlin Frigate

The BERLIN Frigate was one of the first charter ships that the Brandeburg Navy put at disposal of Prince Frederick William. Built in Zeeland in 1674, she was 80 feet long and 22 feet wide. In 1676 she was armed with 15 cannons.

The crew was comprised of 70-100 men. After going into service in 1675 till 1679 the frigate Berlin, commanded by the Dutch Captain C.Reers, took part in several exploits; in 1675 it attacked the Swedish fortress of Karlsburg, in November of the same year it pursued the French corsair ‘La Royae de Dunquerque’.

As from May 1776 the frigate operated in the Baltic Sea against Sweden. The frigate Berlin and the ‘Konig von Spanien’ captured the Swedish ships ‘Leoparden’ armed with 22 cannons, and the ‘Diederik’, armed with 4 cannons. Later the Berlin captured the ‘Maria’ another Swedish ship which once had been used for the postal service. This Ship Model is single planked.
