ARROW - Gunboat 1814

This model represents a gunboat galley of the American fleet. These galleys made a very important contribution to the American Victory. Small but heavily armed they were extremely agile vessels and made possible extremely rapid maneuvers. Equipped with a cannon and a carronade this gunboat is extremely interesting for its profile and for its sails, which show a marked Mediterranean influence.

August 1814: Washington, the capital of the United States, has been devastated, the army defeated, the government forced to flee the city. The British troops under John Sherbrooke land on the coast of Maine and with increase speed occupy more than 35,000 miles of foreign territory.

The spirit of the revolutionary war seems particularly dead and buried. But as often occurs in the history of the United States of America, just when it seems things can get no worse, the tide begins to turn.

It begins September 11th in the town of Plattsburgh, on the shore of Lake Champlain. The aim of the British is to divide the United States in two, combine the landing in Maine with an attack from Canada across Lake Champlain, natural waterway connecting Montreal and the state of New York. The British fleet under the command of Captain George Downie, includes 16 warships and 100 cannons; the slightly inferior American fleet boasts the uncomparable Thomas McDonough.

Barely 31 years old, Lieutenant MacDonough had given proof of his ability during the battles of Tripoli (1801-1805), commanding the vessel which destroyed the frigate Philadelphia, captured and re-armed by corsairs.

A decade later, in the early hours of the morning of September 11, 1814, the Battle of Lake Champlain began.
The British fleet sails towards the south, but MacDanough's ships rush to cut them off. At the end of the battle four British vessels, masts destroyed are forced to surrender, while the others beat a hasty retreat. This American victory demoralizes the British troops who, nobody knows exactly why call off the final land attack on the already severely besieged fortifications at Platsburgh.

The British return to camp, and during the night take up the route that will take them back into Canada. Never again will they cross the border!
