SLOUP - Brittany Oyster Boat

The Sloup was a boat of the Anchorage of Brest, in Brittany on the north-west coast of France. It was used to collect shellfish, and to a lesser extent oysters and other types of shellfish. Attributable to the vast range of French boat, the Sloup, like all popular boats, was the result of a complex historical evolution and structural adjustment to uses and environments.

Already present in the first decades of the 19th century, the St.Jacques shell disappeared from the Anchorage depths at the middle of the century, and reappeared around 1875; however it was only in 1898 that is collection become so important. The first locally constructed Sloups made their appearance in 1912 and were diffused, with alternate phases until 1926, the year that the work of the small shipyards of the Anchorage resumed with vigour.
