Gary Renshaw

Gary has a professional background as an electrical engineer and from there he moved into vocational education and training, working in TAFE NSW for over 35 years. He started as a teacher and progressed to be a College Director before retiring early. Gary began modelling over 30 years ago and has built many model ship kits from a wide range of manufacturers.

After purchasing Modelers Central in 2005, Gary became interested in make the pathway for a beginner to the craft of modelling as easy and interesting as possible. Gary also recognised the need for ship kits that documented the importance of maritime history in Australia. He has produced a series of unique kits from Australia’s rich maritime history.

Combining his strong background in design of educational resources for online learning with extensive knowledge and experience in model ship building Gary has produced a key learning guide for beginner builders. Called Model Ship Building – Complete Beginners Guide it covers the wide range of skills needed for modelling.

He has also produced an extensive range of 30 instructional DVDs on model ship building. These DVDs provide clear and well-structured steps for learning such techniques as planking a sharp hull, and guide of copper plating. Other DVDs provide a full instructional guide to how to build a range of model ship kits such as How to build the Cutter Mermaid.

Gary continues to design and build new historic ship models and is currently working on the James Caird and Catalpa.
