History of the King of Prussia 1780 Cornish Smuggler
John Carter, nicknamed King of Prussia, was the most famous and capable Cornish smuggler. ‘Prussia Cove” in Cornwall, UK – located between Penzance and Porthleven – was named after him. The nickname was given to him because as a child, when he played war with his brothers, he always pretended to be Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.
The KING OF PRUSSIA – Cornish Smuggler 1780’s supremacy lasted from 1777 to 1807, and at his death he was succeded by his stepson William Richards under whom “Prussia Cove” kept its reputation. Most of what is know about John Carter is a local tale. John and his brother became the leading Cornish Smugglers.
